Endodontics and Root Canals Vienna, Virginia
A root canal is the process of saving a diseased tooth. In many cases, this is a simple procedure.
Damage and Decay
Within the walls of each tooth is a strand of dental pulp, a substance that supplies your teeth with connective tissue, nerves, nutrients and blood vessels. The dental pulp reaches down toward the root of your tooth.
If dental pulp becomes diseased, it dies which cuts off nutrients and nerve signals to your tooth. Without treatment, the dead pulp can infect your tooth to the point that it may need to be extracted.
How Can a Root Canal Help?
During a root canal, the dental pulp is removed, the canal is cleaned and your tooth is sealed. The doctor will create an opening through the crown of the tooth into the dental pulp chamber to remove the pulp. He will then the pulp and permanently fills the chamber to prevent any further decay. Finally, depending on where the tooth is located in your mouth, he will place a temporary filling or crown that will be replaced with a permanent filling or crown once your tooth has healed.
