TMD is an extremely common condition, but it is also often treated inadequately or even misdiagnosed. It is important to know what TMD is and the symptoms associated with it. Because TMD does not go away on its own and will likely get worse over time, working with a highly-skilled dentist as soon as possible is necessary.
What is TMD?
TMD, or temperomandibular joint disorder, is a condition involving pain or issues in the muscles or joint that controls jaw movement. The pain can be located in the jaw area, but can also radiate and affect other parts of the body. Although most dentists can identify TMD, many are unable to treat it. At Pace Dental, we have successfully treated several cases of TMD and help patients enjoy their lives again without worrying about dental-related pain.
At-Home Test for TMD
There is a simple test you can do at home that will give you a good indication of whether or not you have TMD. First, place a finger over the joint in front of your ear. Open your jaw slightly, then open it until you feel the joint move. If it’s tender where you press, or if you hear a clicking or crackling noise, speak with your dentist because you may have TMD.
Symptoms of TMD
There are a few different symptoms associated with TMD. If you have any of the following, schedule an appointment with your dentist to see if it could be TMD or another dental issue causing your problems.
- Jaw pain
- Clicking, grating or popping when you open your mouth
- Dislocated jaw
- Earache
- Pain in the face or neck
- Stiffness in the jaw
- Jaw getting locked or stuck open or closed
