One of the simplest pleasures is feeling the warm sun on your skin. It not only gives you a little glow but makes you feel better. But did you know the closest star on Earth also helps keep your smile healthy? That’s right…catching some rays safely has been shown to improve your oral health. Read on to learn about the connection between sun exposure and your oral health, as well as how to protect yourself while you reap its benefits.

How the Sun Benefits Your Oral Health

As the summer approaches, you will want to soak up some warm sunshine. As you do, keep in mind how it is helping your dental health. Here are two ways how:

It Prevents Gum Disease

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that nearly half (46%) of adults over the age of 30 have some stage of gum disease (inflammation of the gums). While lack of brushing and flossing can largely influence its development, studies have shown that there is a connection between lack of sunlight and gum disease. This can largely be attributed to the fact that sunlight provides the majority of Vitamin D that you need. Without this essential vitamin, your cells produce more cytokines, a protein that contributes to inflammation.

It Strengthens Your Smile

As your body produces vitamin D from direct sun exposure, it regulates the calcium and phosphate levels in the body. These minerals play a major role in keeping your bones and teeth healthy, as well as preventing any abnormalities or deformities. By getting enough sunshine, you will keep your smile strong and healthy.

How Can You Protect Yourself While in the Sun?

While the benefits of the summer sun for your oral health are evident, it’s important you don’t overexpose yourself to too much of it. On average, you only need about 10-30 minutes of unprotected sun a day to get enough Vitamin D. Any more than that, you are at an increased risk of sunburn and even skin cancer. You can minimize any issues caused by excessive sun exposure by taking a few simple precautions, such as:

  • Use sunscreen regularly all over your body and face, including your lips.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Wear a hat consistently.

The sun does wonders for your physical and oral health. By enjoying it cautiously this summer, you are ensuring a healthier, more beautiful smile!
